The Fear of the Lord...What It Is and What It Isn't

At our church our Pastor has recently started a series on Wisdom, and I have also been listening to a teaching series outside of church on walking in the Blessing of God.  In both of these series, the Fear of The Lord has been a prevalent issue.

"The Fear of the Lord" is one of those topics that we often hear mentioned but rarely hear explained.  It sounds like one thing, but we feel like it has to be another.  On the one hand we are taught that our God is loving and merciful and gracious and on the other hand we are being taught to fear him.  We often times find ourselves asking, why would we need to fear a God that is all good, all the time.

The answer to this question lies in the understanding that fear has more than one meaning.  Of course we are familiar with the meaning that refers to terror and worry and dread, but we are not as familiar with the definition that means reverence and awe.  This reverence and awe is what God was referring to when he said fear me to his children, but terror is what he meant for those that would oppose him or his children.

That being said, I pulled 5 things from the Bible that the "Fear of the Lord" is and 5 lies that I have heard others believe that the "fear of the Lord" is and listed them below. I hope this helps:

5 Things the Fear of The Lord Is

  1. The beginning of Wisdom (Psalms 111:10)
  2. The beginning of knowledge. (Proverbs 1:7)
  3. Hatred of evil, pride, arrogance, evil ways, and a perverse mouth. (Proverbs 8:13)
  4. The key to an abundant and long life. (Proverbs 10:27, 14:27, 19:23)
  5. Access to a life in the Blessing of God. (Psalms 112:1)
5 Things the Fear of The Lord Is Not
  1. Trepidation or terror at the mention of God.
  2. Living in constant fear of God's disapproval of everything you do.
  3. Making sure you dot every I and cross every T so you don't provoke God to anger.
  4. Living in constant fear of hell.
  5. Being motivated by fear of consequence to live right before God.

Hello: I believe that what you are saying is correct. You have used Bible Scripture's to back up what you have wrote.
